Media specialist earns prestigious
Diana Rendina, media specialist at Stewart Middle Magnet School, is the recipient of the SLJ (School Library Journal) Build Something Bold Award. This prestigious award is sponsored by LEGO® Education and honors the media specialist who takes the creative approach in programming and lesson planning that incorporates hands-on learning in the library and classroom.
Ms. Rendina has created a media center where students are encouraged to make connections and think outside the box. “She is truly a visionary integrating the STEM theme in the media center, and Ms. Rendina is all about the students,” shared Stewart Principal Baretta Wilson. She has transformed what was once an ordinary media center in to a vibrant, hands-on learning hub filled with LEGOs and bright wall colors. The Stewart media center screams STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) where students are totally immersed in learning. Yes, there are books and bookshelves in this space, but there are also modern tables on casters with white board tops, bright color chairs, a LEGO wall and K’Nex. The students have dubbed it the “maker space” where they can see their ideas come to life.
Ms. Rendina has outfitted this amazing space with funds from multiple grants, Donors Choose, and Scholastic Book Fair fundraisers. As the award winner, Ms. Rendina received $2,500 and a LEGO Education StoryStarter Classroom Set with software and curriculum.
