Hammond Elementary drive lends helping hand to Puerto Rico
Hammond Elementary School prides itself on teaching the character trait of kindness, and the school put that into action this month by collecting supplies for those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
Hammond PTA President Cheryl Latorre found a pilot -- appropriately named Angel -- to take the goods to the hard-hit area of Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico. On Sunday, Oct. 8, she announced the destination to the volunteers working at the school, including one parent whose family was affected in that town.
"We are so proud of our Wolf Cubs and our Wolf Cub families here at Hammond that did all of this," Principal Sheri Norkas said Sunday, surrounded by the collected items. "Not only are they helping families but we are teaching our students kindness and compassion."
