Mintz ES Teacher Authors Children’s Picture Book
Mintz Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Rob Sanders doesn’t just teach students about reading and writing, he shares his literary passion with kids by writing his own children’s books.
He says he’s a writer who teaches and a teacher who writes.
“I want my kids to take away that I write, and I care about writing, and I care about books and care about reading,” Sanders said. “When I started writing picture books about 10 years ago, it was because some of my students kept asking during writing, ‘Where are you books, Mr. Sanders?’ So, I decided to be serious about my writing, like I wanted them to be serious about theirs.”
Sanders recently read his newest creation to students in class to celebrate the release of his latest picture book, “Ruby Rose, Big Bravos.” It's published by Harper Collins.
“Children’s authors call it a book birthday, because we like to celebrate,” said Sanders. “It’s the second book in the series about Ruby Rose who dances her way through life. The story itself is about perseverance, sticking with it and going for what you want, and seeing it through to the end no matter how difficult it is.”
Sanders has been working in the Hillsborough County School District more than a decade at Potter, Buckhorn, Jackson, Lockhart and Mintz Elementary Schools. He’d been a writing resource teacher at Mintz from 2012-2016 and returned to teaching at the school this school year, after working at Lockhart as a writing resource teacher the past year.
“I really missed having my own class, being able to have my own students to sit down with, teach and see their one-on-one, day-after-day, so I’m glad to be back at Mintz. There’s lots of family here,” said Sanders.
