Tampa, Fla. – (May 30, 2017) – Hillsborough County Public Schools recently achieved Gold Status as one of Florida’s Healthy School Districts. The award, an initiative from the Florida Department of Education in conjunction with the Florida Department of Health, rates the policies and processes of school districts in a number of areas including physical education, employee wellness, and healthy school environment.
The district received an outstanding score of 100% for its policies and processes in the areas of Physical Education, Healthy School Environment, Employee Wellness, and Counseling, Psychological and Social Services. Only eight school districts in Florida achieved this level.
Dr. Maria Russ, the district’s supervisor of health services, spearheaded the effort to submit the self-assessment to be considered for this award. “It was a lot of work,” Dr. Russ said. “But we are committed to the health of the whole child and this was a way to demonstrate that.”
School Board member Lynn Gray agrees, and is excited the district accepted the challenge and will be rewarded for its efforts. “I think this is wonderful,” Gray said. “A healthy body is essential to a healthy mind which increases student achievement.”
To qualify, school district representatives were required to fill out the Florida Healthy School District Self-Assessment. The assessment was developed by the Florida Coordinated School Health Partnership and was designed as a way to celebrate the achievements of school districts that excel in areas related to the physical, mental and social health of staff and students.
The gold status recognition is valid from May 2017 until April 2019.
