Chamberlain High School Legacy Project
The newly-formed Chamberlain High School Legacy Committee, comprised of faculty and staff members, administrators, and community members, has committed itself to increasing resources to support the school. To do this, the committee has planned its first big event, the Chamberlain Legacy Gala, which will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the school.
According to committee member Erik Youngs, veteran Culinary Operations Academy (COA) instructor for the student-run Outback Cafe restaurant, “this whole process had kind of a synergistic beginning." The CHS COA has been cooking for the Chamberlain lawyers group for a number of years. They are a group of Chamberlain alumni who went on to become lawyers. The plan for the gala for school improvement was first mentioned by this group to Youngs, "which then grew into a meeting, then grew into a thought, then grew into an idea."
Chamberlain High School, located at 9401 North Boulevard in Tampa, FL, opened in 1956. The school is named in honor of George D. Chamberlain, who served for several years as a trustee for the Hillsborough County School System.
Chamberlain boasts many well-known graduates, including those from the entertainment and fashion industry (Lauren Hutton, Liz Vassey, and Robert Grant), the world of professional sports (Steve Garvey, Elijah Dukes, and Jay Gruden) and plenty of notables who still live and work in the Tampa area. Three successful and well-known alumni will serve as guest speakers at the Gala, including Kathy Castor, U.S. Representative, 14th Congressional District, Ken Hagan, Hillsborough County District 5 Commissioner, and Jane Castor, Former Chief of the Tampa Police Department.
In order to jumpstart the Gala effort, CHS planned a “Day of Work” to do a little sprucing up to the front of the school. The committee collected donations, rounded up willing volunteers, and shared in the planting, painting, and general clean-up of the front of the campus. In addition, the District provided a little bit of help by way of their painting and facilities staff, who sanded, patched and painted several of the metal posts, poles, and flagpole base.
On a Saturday morning in late March, over 60 volunteers showed up bright and early to spread mulch, pick up trash, paint parking poles and driveway posts all across the front of the school. Groups of families from Idlewild Baptist Church worked side by side with students from various clubs at CHS, including Tribe, DECA, Beta Club, Culinary and Vet Assisting students. In addition, faculty members from the Science, Veterinary Assisting, English, and Culinary programs, the Principal, and a representative from the District’s facilities and sites office, wielded rakes, shovels, trash bags and paintbrushes. Even Dr. Larry Sykes, Assistant Superintendent for Outreach and School Improvement, dropped by to greet the workers and bring some delicious donuts to share with everyone. The Culinary department provided hot dogs, snacks, water, and chips for the crews as they completed their assigned tasks.
The evening of the Gala, the activities will move from the area within the front and main lobby of the school to the auditorium, and will showcase several classrooms while sponsors and stakeholders host tables up and down the hallways. A scavenger hunt is planned that will highlight many of the famous alumni of CHS, while COA students butler appetizers among the attendees. The HCPS Security Services Honor Guard will present the colors for the opening of the Gala and music will be provided by CHS music students.
