STAY-cation program means free rides for HCPS students
Hillsborough County middle and high school students can enjoy their independence, save cash, and "go green" on HART buses this spring by riding HART for FREE when they present a valid school ID.
Starting March 1 through March 31, 2017, the STAY-cation program provides youth 18 and under unlimited bus riding on any HART Local, Limited Express, MetroRapid or In-Towner, as well as HARTFlex services.
Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART), Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners have partnered to offer this program.
The partnership is designed to encourage more students to take advantage of public transportation and get in the habit of using transit instead of driving.
"This HART and the BOCC partnership has proven to be very successful. BY offering HCPS students a 30 day free pass allows access to experiences that may have been formerly limited by a lack of transportation. During the month March students can enjoy transportation to jobs, athletic events or clubs, and to enjoy all our community has to offer,” said Superintendent Jeff Eakins, Hillsborough County Public Schools.
Last year, HART partnered with the Hillsborough County School Board and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners to provide an extended version of Stay-cation from March to June and provided 221,363 free rides in that period. For 2017, Stay-cation will run from March 1, 2017 through March 31, 2017.
Transportation leaders hope that students will become accustomed to riding transit while in school, those habits will carry on when making decisions about how to get to work or social events.
HART provided 535,983 free rides to Hillsborough County students under the Annual Stay-cation promotion since its inception in 2010.
