Brewster Celebrates “90 Years of Excellence” in Technical Education
Brewster Technical College celebrated their 90th year of excellence in providing technical education in Hillsborough County. To mark this milestone Brewster hosted an outdoor celebration, with tours and a luncheon, inviting former and current students, district staff, and members of the community.
Special guests and guest speakers included, Association for Career, Technical, Education (ACTE) Director of Public Affairs Alicia Hyslop, Deputy Superintendent Van Ayers, School Board Members April Griffin and Sally Harris, and several former principals. Many of the speakers noted the importance of technical training and its value to the community. As festivities continued attendees reminisced and shared Brewster’s long, rich history and legacy, sharing photos, year books, and warm-hearted stories.
Brewster known to many as the “Opportunity School” officially opened September 13, 1926 and was named in honor of Henry Webb Brewster, a man who envisioned a training center for the working people of Tampa.
The district’s vocational school was erected on the corner of Tampa and Ross Street. Courses were offered in woodworking, automobile mechanics, printing, sheet metal, machine shop, electrical wiring, home economics and commercial vocations.
As Brewster continued to meet the needs of the community during World War II Brewster was later known as Brewster Vocational Technical High School, offering traditional high school programing in addition to several training programs for an emerging workforce. Brewster even adopted the Ram mascot during the era as grew their athletics and other extracurricular programs during the 1940’s. Brewster was the largest and most complete institution of its kind in Florida.
