Over the summer, ten King High School students conducted research alongside experienced University of South Florida (USF) faculty members. The six-week “Summer Research Experience” was a direct result from the efforts of Mr. James Stewart, a King High School teacher who applied for the USF Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program.

This year's theme, Functional Materials, provided educators and students experience conducting materials-related research with USF engineering faculty. Participants shared their experiences with peers, attended seminars and classes, acquired oral and written presentation skills, and learned how to conduct independent research. Participants were assigned to active USF research laboratories and professors to support professional development and foster students' interest in STEM research.

This opportunity allowed students to gain real-life research field work in addition to boosting students' self-confidence and interest in STEM research.
