Walker Middle Magnet Students Attend State Special Olympics
The Walker Middle Magnet team took home four medals at the State Special Olympics competition held at ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney last weekend.
Early Friday morning, students, faculty and parents headed to ESPN World of Sports at Disney to begin their weekend of fun. Upon arrival, the team attended the opening ceremony. Track and the first round of soccer games took place on Friday. On Saturday, Field and the final round of the soccer games took place.
Walker had 4 students representing their Track and Field Team: Tyler Delavina, Montana Murphy, Austin Barrow and Jomana Yousef. Walker’s Unified Soccer Team also advanced to State competition. Their Special Olympians were Heaven Likely, Lucas Garcia, Zackary Dlugi, Paul Kimball and Caleb Luebbers. They were joined by their Unified Partners Nicholas Porchelli, Jenna Hernandez, Adler Edwards, Samantha Smith, Erik Rennesun, Ciara Garza, Samuel Manfrey and Tia Jiran.
Walker’s team advanced to the final round of the soccer tournament and won second place overall. They also placed first in the female throwing competition, first in the 25 meter run and second best in track.
“It’s about everyone having fun and encouraging exceptional education students and athletes,” said DesaRay Cochran, the Head Delegate for the Athletic Division and the Unified Soccer Team at Walker.
This is the first year soccer was introduced. Walker has participated in the state competition for 18 years. The goal is for students to learn how to cooperate with each other and encourage one another.
“I want them to build friendships and long term relationships,” said Cochran. “The students get the opportunity to see and meet other kids and be a part of something.”
Congratulations to the Walker Middle Magnet TEAM!
