Marshall MS achieves AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction status
Ask anybody who has attended, worked, or visited Plant City’s Marshall Middle School about the AVID program, and you are apt to get an earful! Marshall has long been an AVID Demonstration site, with an amazing record of school participation, classroom application, and an overall AVID attitude that permeates the campus. However, this year, they achieved an even greater milestone – the Eastern Division of AVID has formally recognized Marshall MS as an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction by virtue of sheer numbers, statistics, and data.
AVID (which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a critical part of the District’s vision of “preparing students for life.” According to the official letter of announcement which was shared with Superintendent Jeff Eakins in April, “An AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction represents the highest level of AVID implementation, fidelity demonstrating excellence in instructional practice, and the promotion of college readiness school wide.” The letter went on to read, “We applaud your school [Marshall] for their diligence in attaining this achievement and we look forward to their continued efforts in transforming the lives of students across their campus.”
Jazheel Lenegar-Brown, Supervisor for Academic Programs, was ecstatic when she learned of the honor. “This distinction emphasizes the commitment to AVID that schools in our district have! Marshall Middle school is serving as a great example of what many of our other AVID schools can accomplish.” Marshall’s Lead Teacher and AVID Implementation Specialist Elisa Humphrey, was equally excited about the new designation. She has been involved with AVID for over nine years, and her enthusiasm and professional attitude about the program knows no bounds, but with this new accolade, she feels that Marshall has achieved the recognition that it deserves. She says, “Getting the recognition as an AVID National Demonstration school and now as a school of distinction tells me that our vision hasn't changed, only solidified. It gives us a unified vision that says we are doing what is right for students.” AVID at Marshall MS is truly a school wide program – even “students not in the elective are getting the same tools and strategies to get them school ready.”
