Perfect attendance pays for Newsome graduate who wins brand new Toyota
Toyota of Tampa Bay, in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools, hosted “A Perfect Car for Perfect Attendance” celebration to honor HCPS seniors with at least one year of perfect attendance while in high school by giving away a free car to one very lucky student.
During a School Board meeting held in May, each of the 1,769 eligible seniors who earned at least one year of perfect attendance in high school were entered into a random drawing. That random drawing selected additional eligible seniors for the final giveaway event, which was held at the HCPS district administrative center.
Each student who graduated with perfect attendance for all 13 years earned two entries into the final drawing, including Sarah Grabau and Joshua Quiggle of Newsome High School, Kristal Hill of Robinson High School, Dakota Johnson of Chamberlain High School, Carissa Stopowenko of Lennard High School and D’Artagnan Campbell of Plant City High School.
Standing within 10 feet of the brand new Toyota Yaris, each of the six 13-year perfect attendance students were called up to pick a key from a glass bowl, followed by each of the nine other students whose names had been added to the drawing. There were even extra keys in the bowl, so some students were given another chance to choose a second key by having their names drawn again. Finally, the bowl of keys was empty!
In front of a growing crowd, the students patiently waited in a single-file line to walk up to the driver’s side car door and try their key in the lock. As each one attempted to unlock the door and failed, the crowd breathed collective “oohs” and “ahhs” and then waited silently while the next student tried their key.
At last, one key successfully opened the door, and Quiggle’s mother, who was standing in for her son who had joined the United States Air Force and just left for basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, literally jumped for joy. TV cameras and well-wishers immediately surrounded her, while she smiled, cried, beamed and waved her son’s picture that she had fastened to a handle so he could be in all the photos with her that day.
Congratulations, Joshua, for winning the car, for having perfect attendance for 13 years, and for making a decision to serve your country. Congratulations to all the other students who were eligible for the drawing, and for making us #HCPSProud!
