Emergency Management

The Hillsborough County School Board engages and partners with the American Red Cross and the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management to provide emergency shelters, as required under FEMA Emergency Support Function protocols. This local partnership is a legally binding component of the Statewide Mutual Aide Agreement from the Florida Division of Emergency Management as mandated in the Emergency Management Act, Chapter 252 of Florida State Statute.

Even though all of our school sites get rated and inspected for use as an emergency shelter, 62 sites have been identified and designated for this purpose specifically. These designated sites accommodate a wide range of our citizens, volunteers and public safety personnel based on the severity of the emergency we are confronted with. HCPS also has identified four shelters that will receive service animals during an EOC activation.

A useful and informative website is the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management. This site provides a shelter list, materials for preparation and even allows you to sign up for alerts that you can receive on your smartphone.
