Each child is provided two balanced meals and a snack each day. The Nutrition/Educational Support Program Manager and the Nutrition Food Service Coordinator along with the Nutrition sub-committee supervise and plan the menus for breakfast and lunch. Head Start participates in the Hillsborough County School Lunch Program and assistance is available to help staff and parents identify nutritional needs of the children.
The Nutrition/Educational Support Manager, Hillsborough County Public Schools Food Service Coordinator, Hillsborough County Extension Office Nutritional Consultant and the HCPS Head Start Parents Sub-Committee meet the second Monday of each month to plan the menus (breakfast, lunch and one snack). The meals provide the students with foods that supply two-thirds of their “Recommended Dietary Allowances” and contribute to good dental health.
Student Nutrition Services can modify or substitute meals for students with special dietary needs. The first step in this process is to obtain a Diet Prescription Form for Special Meals, which can be downloaded from the Hillsborough County Public Schools web site. The program can make requested modifications only if the form is completed, signed by the student's physician, returned to the HCPS Head Start Office and forwarded to the student's assigned school.
