The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in regular session Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at 3 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Doretha W. Edgecomb, April Griffin, Sally Harris, Carol W. Kurdell, Melissa Snively (arrived at 3:07 p.m.),Cindy Stuart, and Susan Valdes present.  Chair April Griffin presided.

Approximately 110 people were in the audience, including other school district personnel.

Call to Order:  Meeting called to order at 3 p.m.

Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance:  Moment of silence followed by Vice Chair Stuart leading in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag.

Chair Griffin introduced Noel Lyons, Gaither High School, Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) member, who served as the Student School Board Representative.

Adoption of the Agenda:

Motion by Vice Chair Stuart, second by Mrs. Harris, to adopt the agenda.  Motion unanimously carried.

Board – Roll Call:  Chair Griffin declared a quorum with six Board Members present with Melissa Snively absent from the dias (arrived at 3:07 p.m.)

Motion by Mrs. Edgecomb, second by Vice Chair Stuart, to approve the following minutes:

Motion unanimously carried.

Cynthia Gibson, HCPS School Bus Driverhighlighted the item.  Mrs. Gibson has worked for Hillsborough County Public Schools for 31 years.

Motion by Mrs. Valdes, second by Mrs. Edgecomb, to adopt October 17 – 23, 2016, as National School Bus Safety Week.  Motion unanimously carried.

Superintendent Eakins advised that a SpringBoard Workshop will be scheduled to provide ample time for discussion and feedback.

Strategic Plan 1st Quarter Update will be brought to the November 1, 2016, School Board Meeting

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Results: 

  • Hispanic Students increased 18 percent
  • African American Students increased by 10 percent

Elevate Schools Update

  • Mile Elementary School:  House System, Academically focused clubs, University of Tampa volunteers serving as mentors and tutors
  • BT Washington:  Members of Hillsborough Bar Association will read to students as part of the John Germany "Read to Dream” program
