The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met for recognitions Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at 5:30 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Doretha W. Edgecomb, April Griffin, Sally Harris, Carol Kurdell, Melissa Snively, Cindy Stuart, and Susan Valdes present.  Chair Susan L. Valdes presided.

Call to Order:  Meeting called to order at 5:30 p.m.

Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance:  Moment of silence followed by Vice Chair Edgecomb leading in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag.

Phil Jones, Executive Director of the Hillsborough Education Foundation, Will Recognize Three Organizations for Their Support of Public Education (Hillsborough Education Foundation)

Phil Jones, President, Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF), highlighted the recognition. 

Mr. Jones recognized representatives from the following organizations for their support of the district and HEF.  The business partners were presented with certificates.

  • CarMax -  Linda White, Sales Manager
  • Metropolitan Ministries - Tim Marks, President and CEO; Christine Long, Chief Programs Officer
  • Community Members - Grant Wilson and Diana Stevens

Recognize Office Furniture Donation from Gerdau Long Steel North America (Operations Division)moved up on agenda

James Dieringer, Manager of Logistics, highlighted the recognition.  Mr. Paul Schatzberg, Security, Facilities, and Administrative Manager of Gerdau Long Steel North America, was recognized for the generous donation.  A plaque was presented to Mr. Schatzberg.

Recognition of the 2015/2016 Middle School District Champions for Basketball (Student Services Division)

Jennifer Burchill, Assistant Director of Athletics, highlighted the recognition and introduced Justin Youmans, Assistant Principal of Rampello K-8 Magnet School.  Mr. Youmans made brief comments and introduced Coach Mike Castellano.  Coach Castellano recognized the 2015 Girls Basketball District Champions.

Recognition of the Winners for the Tampa Hillsborough County Public Library Our Hispanic Heritage Art Contests (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

Dana Warner, Supervisor of K-12 Art, highlighted the recognition and introduced Melissa Falvey, Principal Librarian of the Tampa Hillsborough County Library.  Mrs. Falvey presented Superintendent Eakins and Board members with bookmarks and recognized the following art contest winners.  Winners were presented with certificates.

Kimberly DeFusco, Supervisor of Library Media Services, Secondary, highlighted the recognition and recognized Diana Rendina, Library Media Specialist at Stewart Middle Magnet School for her outstanding achievements.  Ms. Baretta Wilson, Principal of Stewart Middle Magnet School, was in attendance for support.

Recognition of Literacy Excellence of District and State Literacy Coaches and Reading Teachers of the Year (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

Lynn Dougherty-Underwood, Director of K-12 Literacy, highlighted the recognition and introduced the following individuals for their outstanding accomplishments.  Certificates were presented to the winners.

Proclamation by Governor Rick Scott Observing November 2015 as Florida Parental Involvement in Education Month (Academic Support and Federal Programs Division)

MaryLou Whaley, Director of Parent/Community Involvement, highlighted the recognition and introduced Robin DeVault, President of Hillsborough County Council PTA/PTSA.  Ms. DeVault read the proclamation.

Chair Susan Valdes and April Griffin made brief comments.

Chair Valdes congratulated Eric Young’s team and the team of teachers for earning the Distinction of Model Academy for the 2nd time.

Chair Valdes publically wished Dr. Alberto Vázquez a happy birthday.
