The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met for recognitions Tuesday,
March 31, 2015, at 5:30 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Acting Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Doretha W. Edgecomb, Sally Harris, Melissa Snively, Cindy Stewart, and Susan Valdes present. Chair S. Valdes presided.

Call to Order: meeting called to order at 5:30 p.m.
Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance: Moment of silence followed by Vice Chair Edgecomb leading in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag.
Board – Roll Call: Chair S. Valdes said five Board Members present. Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Kurdell absent.

Recognition of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Governor’s Shine Award (Curriculum and Instruction Division) Larry Plank, Director K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, gave a brief history of the Governor’s Shine Award, highlighted Ms. Traynham’s career, and introduced Sue Traynham, Sickles High School. She was presented a certificate and acknowledged her husband and principal Jake Russell who were here to support her. |

Recognition of District Representatives for the Sunshine State Scholars Program for 2014/2015 (Curriculum and Instruction Division) Larry Plank, Director K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, briefly outlined the Sunshine State Scholars Program, highlighted Madison Baker, East Bay High School and Alain Hyacinthe, Newsome High School’s educational career. Alain Hyacinthe could not be present. Students were presented certificates. Kevin and Tara Baker were present and recognized. Mrs. Edgecomb made comments. |

Recognition of the 2014 Tampa Bay Technology Forum Industry Achievement Educator of the Year Award (Curriculum and Instruction Division) Larry Plank, Director K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, highlighted the criteria for the award and introduced Scott Coonfare, Gibsonton Elementary School, who was presented a certificate. Dr. Plank highlighted his career. |

Recognition of the 2014/2015 Middle School District Champions for Track and Soccer, the Florida High School Athletics Association State Champions for Cheerleading and Wrestling, and the National Federation of High School Associations Wrestling Coach of the Year (Student Services Division) Jennifer Burchill, Assistant Director of Athletics introduced middle school representatives and Lanness Robinson, Director of Athletics, introduced high school representatives. Recognition of Hillsborough County Public Schools "Road-eo" Bus Drivers (Facilities Division) James Beekman, General Manager, Transportation made brief and introduced 1st and 2nd place winners who will go on to National competition in Minnesota in July. Cassandra Varnes, 1st place in the state, Area 5 Bus Driver – 20 years of service Dorothy Knight, 2nd place in the state, Area 6 Bus Driver – 21 years of service Mr. Beekman recognized the following retirees who were present:

Recognition of Idlewild Baptist Church’s Day of Caring Robert Wegmann, General Manager, Maintenance, introduced Pastor Barry Chesney of Idlewild Baptist Church who made brief remarks about the Day of Caring. In February, 386 people in the congregation participated in the Day of Caring supporting our schools. Pastor Chesney said they are working with Mr. Farkas to have a similar event later on in the year. Comments by Mrs. Stuart. |
