Schools and district offices are closed on Friday during summer hours. Our district will return to regular business hours Monday, July 30, 2018.

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in workshop session April 7, 2015, at 1 p.m., in the Staff Conference Room, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Acting Superintendent Jeff Eakins and Board Members Doretha W. Edgecomb, April Griffin, Melissa Snively, Cindy Stuart, and Susan Valdes present. Chair Valdes presided.

Members Absent: Sally Harris (ill) and Carol Kurdell (funeral)

Approximately 18 people were in the audience, including other school district personnel.

Chair Valdes called the workshop to order at 1:03 p.m.

(1) Department of Health Partnership and Dental Sealant (Student Services)

This workshop was held to provide the Board with an overview of the School Health Services Plan and Dental Health Program, which is provided in collaboration with the Florida Department of Health (DOH), Hillsborough County, and numerous community partners.

Mr. Eakins made brief remarks regarding the workshop and welcomed everyone.

Introductions were made of representatives from the Department of Health, Suncoast Community Health Centers, Tampa Family Health Centers, MORE Health, Inc., Tampa Bay Greater Oral Health, Inc., and South Tampa Dental Health.

Chair Valdes recognized the work that Dr. Maria Russ has done in her department keeping our kids healthy.

A Power Point presentation was provided pertaining to Department of Health Partnership and Dental Sealants.

Wynne Tye discussed objectives of the School Health Services Plan, Dental Health Program, and Public and Private Community Partnerships.

Dr. Russ discussed the School Health Services Plan – mandated services and minimum requirements.

Dr. Doug Holt (Department of Health) discussed the School-based Sealant Program and the next steps for Year Four (Partners Planning Meeting – April 2015; meet with school district staff to consider recommendations from the planning meeting).

Holly Saia discussed the School Advisory Health Council (SDHAC) and coordinated school health partners, Dental Health Program (public/private community partners and collaborators).

There was general discussion by board members, staff, and partners to include:

  • Clarity on roles of partners – challenges they face
  • Educating parents / accountability / communication / prevention
  • Pros and cons of Dentist vs. Dental Hygienist providing services – provide breakdown on differences between the two (training, cost difference of dentist/hygienist providing services)
  • If possible, meet more often with partners (quarterly meetings); provide board with report (recommendations) from the April planning meeting.
  • Keep time to a minimum for students out of classroom for services.
  • Consider offering services to students during the summer (summer programs/HOST)
  • Talk with principals about education/literacy of the program (provide feedback of interaction with principals)
  • Be more specific, clear in conversation and with contracts as we move forward – purpose is to keep students healthy and remain in school.
  • Provide information to the Board (Friday Report) regarding services by grade levels and occurrence, as well as copy of the two contracts (MOU) for comparison.

Chair Valdes and board members thanked the partners for their participation and open conversation. Mr. Eakins also thanked everyone – when the Board receives the next Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it will be beneficial for all.
