(1) Update on Hillsborough County Public Schools "Bring your Own Device” (BYOD), and other Information & Technology Initiatives (Information and Technology Division)

This workshop was held to provide the Board with information regarding initiatives in the Information and Technology Division to support a digital learning environment.

Mr. Eakins made brief remarks regarding the workshop, and commented that Anna Brown was not present for the workshop due to death of family member.

Sharon Zulli provided a Power Point presentation update on the digital learning environment – discussion included:

  • Update on Bring Your Own Device (100 percent of schools have submitted an approved plan; color coding device zones: Green - Device Friendly Zone; Yellow - Device Limited Zone; Red - Device Restricted Zone
  • Overview of the plan for 1:1 Vanguard pilot (Cohorts 1 and 2)
  • Update our expenditures with the Digital Classroom Plan (DCP) this year - ($75,000 for Expert/Conversations and coaching model at Ferrell, Franklin, and Thompson)
  • Update on new Race To The Top (RTTT) grant from the state ($964,000)
  • Plans for next year’s Digital Classroom allocation
  • Plans for our District Professional Development team to sustain the training for implementing a digital learning environment

There was general discussion by board members and staff to include:

  • Consistency in discipline, from school-to-school, when student caught in device restricted zones.
  • Where we are in curriculum alignment and teacher training from 2013 with how students are engaging with BYOD – would like feedback from students in what schools are really doing and how BYOD is working.
  • Teaching digital citizenry – number of discipline referrals during lunch and in-between time (is allowing use of devices keeping students busy during this time)
  • Consideration of lease program for devices
  • Possibility of the state making in-class computer use mandatory
  • Timeline completion for 1:1 has not been set, as funding part of it and we need to make sure we are fully ready (engagement with staff development, teachers getting ready and comfortable)
  • Tracking student success (Project Innovate - Cohort 1)

Chair Valdes thanked Ms. Zulli for the technology update. With no further discussion, the workshop adjourned at 10 a.m. (Audio recording on file.)
