(1) Strategic Marketing for Hillsborough County Public Schools (Communications)

This workshop was held to provide the Board with information regarding the school district’s marketing efforts.

Mr. Eakins made brief remarks on where we are on are marketing initiatives.

Dr. Jason Pepe introduced members of the Communications Department: Greg Hart (Web Services), Karin Davis-Thompson (Internal Communications), Ginain Grayes (Strategic Marketing).

Dr. Pepe and his team provided a Power Point presentation – "Engaging Parents, Kids, and the Community” – discussion included:

  • Purpose of the Strategic Marketing Department
  • Services offered by the department and its way of work
  • How the school district can engage stakeholders, build community pride, and recognize students’ achievements
  • Current and future marketing initiatives and projects (marketing, social media, advertising, campaigns, internal/external newsletters, community partnerships, media, and print)
  • Web Services (redesigning school websites)

There was general discussion by board members and staff to include:

  • Role of all our employees in marketing student success, as well as our community partners – we all play a role in preparing kids for graduation – the role of preparing a student for "life.”
  • The need for marketing as we are not the only game in town anymore – increased competition, media scrutiny, changing demographics, public skepticism, and limited resources – find the good news, earn trust from the public.
  • Advertising/marketing partnerships (buses, malls, flyers in water/electric bills, etc.)
  • Suggestion to include resource officers, security officers, etc. in videos (positive role models); highlight "best kept” secrets
  • Start earlier than 5th grade educating parents on their school choices (attracting middle school parents/students), middle school principals attending events (visits to feeder schools, etc.) so parents/students are familiar with the principals.
  • Market schools in advance of open house
  • Terrie Dodson-Caldevilla is working on employee "Quality Service Initiative” (rewarding staff, visible support for staff; celebrating the successes of our staff, etc.).
  • Make sure website information is accurate and consistent; parents need to know who to contact for assistance other than school site if needed (i.e. area leadership directors).
  • Getting message out that we provide only the best service to our clients – message remains the same – Hillsborough County Public Schools is the best (only) option for all of our kids – we prepare kids for graduation.

With no further discussion, the workshop adjourned at 3:02 P.M. (Audio recording on file.)
