(1) Further Discussion for the Procedures of Selecting Future Superintendent (Human Resources Division)

This workshop was held to provide school board members the opportunity to further discuss procedures of selecting future superintendent. Discussion included search and selection options, and tentative fast-track timeline to allow selection and hiring by June 30, 2015 (similar to Palm Beach County Schools).

Vice Chair Edgecomb made opening remarks regarding the continuation of work between the Board and the Superintendent Staff as the district moves through the transition period of hiring a Superintendent. She would like the Board to not just focus on the hiring of a superintendent, but also give a sense of stability internally and externally.

Several attachments were provided to Board members. Gretchen Saunders explained in detail the agenda item attachments:

  • Attachment A – History from 2005 Superintendent Search
  • Attachment B – FSBA document includes salary information and a Power Point
  • Attachment C – Calendar draft timeline from today through June 30th

There was general discussion with school board members and staff – considerations/suggestions/concerns included:

  • Fast tracking does not provide adequate time to hear from stakeholders.
  • Discussed pros and cons of a national search.
  • Need consistency within our district.
  • National searches are not popular in Florida, because of public record laws, sunshine laws and the operation of legislators.
  • Discussed community meetings and what they would provide.
  • Morale of district is important.
  • Board has not discussed what we want in a superintendent
  • Wants to hear Jeff Eakins’ vision for the district.
  • Should offer Jeff Eakins a two year contract.
  • Need to address the evaluation tool.
  • Discussed timeline and should they go with a national search.
  • Consensus on national search to follow the Palm Beach County format.
  • Survey community is for transparency. It was noted that a survey was not conducted when the termination action was taken.
  • Consensus reached to bring an agenda item to the February 17, 2015, meeting for action.

Motion by April Griffin, second by Sally Harris, to continue the discussion in afternoon workshop at 1 p.m. Motion carries unanimously.

With no further discussion, the workshop adjourned at 10:53 a.m. (Audio recording on file)
