The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in a special session Thursday, November 10, 2016, at 1 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Doretha W. Edgecomb, Sally Harris, Carol W. Kurdell, Cindy Stuart, and Susan Valdes present.  Vice Chair Stuart presided.

Advantage Academy Middle School

Principal:  Keith Miller

  • Current enrollment:  145 students
  • Grades 6th– 8th
  • Teachers teaching bell to bell
  • Behavioral change
  • Distinguish between Coach and Dean
  • What extra support do you provide to instructional staff?
  • Monthly book student on differentiated instruction
  • Tutoring and Clubs provided
  • Student challenges with homework
  • All teachers are certified
  • Principal provides support to Math teacher
  • Demographics:  57 ½ percent Hispanic population
  • Suggested reach out to churches in area for assistance
  • Student ratio per teacher:  1:22
  • Retention rate of teachers:  Nine total teachers, four left last year
  • Student loss through Tomlin, Marshall, and Turkey Creek Middle Schools

Pivot Charter School

Principal:  Elizabeth Bretz

  • School opened in 2011
  • Current enrollment:  277 students
  • Grades 6th– 12th
  • Growth from 50 students to 280
  • Tools in place to assist struggling students:  tutoring provided afterschool and weekends, computer programs, co-teaching
  • Majority population from Brandon and Riverview area
  • Teachers present lesson plans for review weekly, benchmark assessments discussed
  • Primary areas of certification:  Microsoft Office, 85% of classrooms have desktop computers
  • Challenges include space for students struggling in reading class; small group settings needed
  • Staff available to work with small group settings

Walton Academy for the Performing Arts

Principal: Tanika Walton
Board Chair:  Belinda Huggins

  • School opened in 2004
  • Current enrollment:  204 students
  • Grades K – 5th
  • Consider changing start time due to excessive tardies
  • Conference with parents/students with five or more tardies
  • Consistently work together with lesson plans
  • Creating teamwork:  Retreat, learn about others, communication, commitment to meet as a team, Recognition "Teacher of the Month”, empower teachers to do more
  • Barriers include parent engagement and homework
  • Student agreement
  • Music and Dance held twice a week
  • Small group instruction provided

Woodmont Charter School

Principal:  Latasha Scurry
Board Chair:  Rod Jurado

  • Title 1 Math Intervention Specialist
  • Reading Intervention Specialist
  • Small groups meeting twice a week
  • Lexia 5 used as current reading program for K-8
  • Think Through Math program
  • Challenges with Kindergarten discipline
  • Five principals within a six year period
  • ½ substitute provided for teachers to meet with CRT’s once a month
  • Cross training teachers
  • Principal reviews grade books
  • Lesson plans reviewed weekly

BridgePrep Academy of Tampa

Principal:  Christine Harris

  • Current enrollment:  291 students
  • Grades K – 8th
  • What are you looking for in lesson plans?  Strong instructional framework for planning, student friendly
  • Achieve 3000 has been in use for three months
  • Challenged with parent involvement (vision of school)

Village of Excellence Academy Elementary School

Principal:  Romain Edwards
Board Chair:  Robert Irvin

  • School opened in 2014
  • Current enrollment:  264 students
  • Grades 6th– 8th
  • Currently 21 staff members
  • Last year consisted of 1/3rd new teaching staff
  • Professional development provided

Village of Excellence Academy Middle School

Principal:  Chanell Paynter

  • Current enrollment:  106 students
  • Grades 6th– 8th
  • Currently 11 staff members
  • Teachers receive Professional Development on selected curriculum
  • Teachers are observed weekly
  • 70% of students began as elementary students
  • Challenge with teachers ability to adjust time with student understanding of curriculum
  • Struggling in math

King’s Kids Academy of Health Sciences

Principal:  Lilia "Maria” Stroud
Board Chair:  Jacqueline Coffie-Leeks

  • Current enrollment:  138 students
  • Grades K – 5th
  • Currently 7 staff members:  5 highly qualified and 2 substitutes
  • Attendance and tardies are major areas of concern
  • Principal and Assistant Principal review lesson plans previous week
  • New location provided more support for students
  • Successful at building a strong culture
